Meningitis Research Foundation is delighted to have the support of Ikonn racing. Your support is a great help in our fight against meningitis.
In the UK, meningitis remains the leading infectious cause of death in children under the age of 5, and the impact for the 3,400 families affected by meningitis every year can be life altering. For every 10 people affected, 1 will die, and 2 will be left with serious lifelong after effects such as deafness, epilepsy, severe mental impairment and multiple limb amputations. Although anyone can be affected, it is?babies, young children and young adults?who are most at risk.
Meningitis Research Foundation is the UK?s and Ireland’s leading meningitis research charity. Our vision is a world free from meningitis. There are three main ways we fight against the disease:
- We fund pioneering scientific research, so far we have invested over 18.6m in 147 projects
- We actively promote knowledge and raise awareness amongst health professionals and the public
- We provide much needed practical and emotional support to families devastated by the disease
Current areas of high concern for the charity involve a particularly nasty strain of meningococcal W (MenW) disease, especially amongst teenagers. Monitoring and evaluation of the new meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine for small children is also crucial, as is campaigning for its extension to cover older children and adolescents who are still vulnerable. Newborns continue to be a group hit hard by the disease, so we are investing heavily in neonatal research to fight against this.
